(2) Holistic Health Training Workshop

HHP facilitated its first holistic health training workshop in May for a group of over 20 local doctors training to go into general practice. The subjects covered were:

·        Tai Chi

·        Acupuncture

·        Psychotherapy/ Counselling

·        Community Gardens

Participants were encouraged to review their definition of “Health” by challenging their concepts of health and medicine and to think about how it might transferred to their own practice. Holistic health focuses more on prevention, self-healing, treating causes of illness and not just symptoms, treating the whole person and thinking about their context..

There was of course the obligatory tour of the eco-homes and other environmental aspects of the Hockerton Housing Project. The day was finished with a hot meal and wine-tasting.

The general feedback was very good with most of the content useful and enjoyable. The feedback from the course organiser, Dr Philip Smith (Mansfield & District GPVTS) was also very positive:

We had an excellent time.....I think everyone found the meeting informative, interesting and stimulating. The only downside was that it would have been nice to have medical herbalism and homeopathy included….thank you for such a wonderful day.

And from one of the GP trainees: Great day, informative and food for thought.

This workshop could be modified to suit a range of different interest groups such as Doctors, other medical professions, and complimentary/alternative practitioner groups. If you would like HHP to run a similar workshop for your group pleas contact Nick White to discuss further on 01636 816902 or email hhp@hockerton.demon.co.uk

25 youngsters from Newark & Nottingham area took part in a workshop run by the Nearly Instant Theatre Session (NITS) at HHP. It was the first time that NITS has been held at HHP. After initial warm up sessions the youngsters devised their own plays on recycling finishing with a performance to parents and HHP members.

Indeed it was such a success that N.I.T.S & HHP are now planning a full week workshop –

(4) Networking Travel Bursaries

Community Action for Energy (café) are offering travel bursaries to enable CAfE community members to visit each other and are designed to help you make the most of the wealth of expertise, experience and enthusiasm within the CAfE network. By visiting other groups you can get first-hand experience of the steps you may need to go through to set up a similar initiative of your own. HHP is a member of café and so you could travel to us for free!

You can search the projects database and case studies on the website http://www.est.org.uk/cafe/ for ideas for potential project ideas that you could develop yourself. Both the database and the case studies provide contact details and, if the organisers of these projects are willing to provide you with advice, you can apply to CAfE for a bursary to visit them.

CAfE is a network of people who share a common interest in community energy projects and ideas. Membership of the network is free and by joining you can keep up to date with news on community-based energy initiatives, as well as hearing about funding opportunities, training sessions and other news from the network. You can view most of this site without a member login, but to access all areas you need to become a member. If you are not currently a member you can join on-line - see http://www.est.org.uk/cafe/.

(5) Media Burst

HHP has had a flurry of interest from various written and broadcast media over recent months including:

·        BBC One O'clock News & BBC News 24 (23rd June 2005) - Live broadcast linked to Governments launch of a consultation on micro-generation

·        The Independent (1st June 2005) - Diary Of An Eco-Builder - 'If you and your mates want to build a fully fledged eco-idyll, this is the way to do it' (Will Anderson)

This article was written after Will had joined a trip to HHP and another local eco-development, courtesy of Sponge, a network of eco-building professionals and enthusiasts from south London www.spongenet.org)

A short excerpt:

“Hockerton is a contemporary autonomous community. They generate their own energy, collect their own rainwater, process their own sewage (in a reed bed in the lake) and grow a lot of their own food. It didn't cost much to build and it's clearly a delight to live there. If you and your mates want to build a fully-fledged rural eco-idyll, start here.”

For the full story see http://money.independent.co.uk/property/homes/story.jsp?story=643004

·        Carlton TV (16th Feb 2005) used HHP as part of a news item to coincide with initiation of the Kyoto Protocol

·        Regeneration & Renewal magazine (27th May 2005) – “Innovations – A self-sufficient eco-housing scheme” – Article addressing questions set by Stan Crawford (Sherwood Energy Village) and Georgia Elliott-Smith (Director of sustainable building consultancy, Element 4).

·        BBC2-‘No Waste Like Home’ (autumn 2005) – HHP was filmed earlier this year as part of this new ‘factual entertainment’ show. In each episode an eco-expert reveals some of the most wasteful families losing thousands each year, and contributing to the environment's downfall. In a radical two-week experiment the families face a complete lifestyle overhaul to save money and become more eco-friendly. At the end of each episode examples of good eco practice are exhibited and this is where HHP comes into play.. The programmes have also been licensed by Australia's Nine Network. Virgin Books Ltd. has been appointed to publish and distribute around the world, a paperback to accompany the first series of ‘No Waste Like Home’.

·        Energy & Environment magazine (DEFRA) (July/August edition) – Article about HHP

·        Self Build & Design Magazine (Due out in next edition) – Article about HHP and new ‘Master Class’ events

·        Artist Blacksmith magazine – Article about HHP’s new recycled sculpture – see HHP news item on webpage http://www.hockerton.demon.co.uk/news/may05.html

·        Betty TV contacted us recently to see if HHP were interested in a programme they are doing for a Channel 4 Learning series looking at money and life – They want to meet young people who have grown up in an environment where material goods are not given such importance, and the ideas of sharing and living in a more sensitive way have been the norm.
